Comment Here On Session 9

Welcome to day 3 of the Summit.  I hope you are feeling like you actually are at the top of a summit right now -- maybe a little out of breath from the rush of hard-hitting content, maybe a little light headed from taking it all in -- but seeing clearly and enjoying a new perspective on your leadership and maybe even your life.

This morning kicks off with an interview of President Jimmy Carter with Bill Hybels.  I am eager to learn from his experiences in so many different areas of leadership.  More than anything, I respect President Carter for the way he has redefined the role of a former President from "vacationer-in-chief" to humanitarian and servant.

I know there have been some mixed reactions to our having President Carter as part of the Summit.  I want to invite you to comment here and share your thoughts and impressions of what you hear in this session.  What are you learning?  What are you wrestling with?

Oh...and how awesome is Kirk Franklin!

Check back here for related links that we'll be adding during the session, and don't forget to explore the multitude of links, resources, and next steps available on the sessions-in-depth pages.

Peoria, IL is rocking w/ Kirk - when he shared his testimony w/ Nancy, he received a lot of clapping and encouragement even though it appeared to be quite at Willow.

and its wild because the format reminds me so much of Roger Breland and Truth where they had just off the charts good singers and roger would provide sound bytes here and there...same here with Mr. Kirk. I'm very impressed with kirk's ad libbing skills, dance moves [especially the Elvis], and his ADD-like energy...do you want a revolution whoop whoop! I hope they sing "Don't Worry" later on but they probably won't since its older.

It's so achingly sad to me that Bill has to chide the audience to learn from other people. I thought the days of the church being isolated & self-righteous were mostly in the rearview mirror! But kudos to Bill for going straight after the critics!

Charlie is so right. It make us better leaders to here from someone we might not agree with. Mr. Carter has done more for humanity than any former president in history. His legacy will be felt for decades to come.

We must learn from the mistakes of the past when we stayed silent or even supported the injustices of the past like - racism. We must stand up as individuals and as the church and become advocates for the poor.

you bet it is, charlie dean. money controls everything - especially in a country as "mediated" as ours, where the media is our only window to society. the more powerful the rich become, the less access and influence the poor (or less rich) will be.

I think the "gap" is another way of describing the lack of general compassion for humanity from Christ's representatives. The unwillingness of the church to truly sacrifice trusting the savior for the outcome not only for those that we sacrifice for but for ourselves. The lack of the general church's unwillingness to be inconvenienced for the sake of another.

Wouldn’t it be fantastic if more of this nation’s leaders would be as open about their faith as President Carter was … and still is? And what would happen in this nation if its leaders would lead as Jesus did and focus on the weak … the poor … the forgotten … peace throughout the world? Again – as Porter said – government will not solve the wrongs of this world. The church must lead the way. SO LET’S GET GOING!

Basically, our biggest challenge, as always, is our willingness to die to ourselves and our desires in order to take on His. I think taking on Christ's likeness (closing the gap) absolutely is our biggest challenge.

I think Carter's comment that the wider the gap gets between the rich and the poor the harder it is going to get to reach the poor is very important. I think this will also include reaching them for Christ. We are willing to share Christ but not our wallets. We are willing to share the love of Christ but let kids die of starvation. No wonder the poor don't believe our message of hope.

where's the balance? how much of our "american" lives do we deny, even if though they contain a lot of wonderful ways to worship God? how much of the pain of this world do we trust God to take care of?

I have been truly touched by the speakers at the Summit. I understand on a real level that the gap grows and shrinks throughout history. Kurt I do not believe this all needs to be laid at the feet of the Christian Church. This is not a lack of compassion by the church but a lack of Christ's Compassion i all of our lives throughout the world. It reminds me that this issue in our world gets solved by the love of Jesus Christ lived out in the lives of those in His Church. We need to continue to learn, be inspired, get motivated, pray deeply, and continue to reach out to those around the world with the love of Christ. The Hope of the World is the Local Church and the Hope of the Local Church is Jesus Christ. We need to bring Jesus to the world through living in and becoming like Jesus everyday. We do this one voice at a time and then the world has a chance to change.

We absolutely need to STOP telling people "all you need is Jesus" when we aren't willing to be Jesus to them. It's prostitution: paying the "price" of "telling" only to gain a false sense of self gratification for our non-accomplishment! Jesus example of reaching the peoples spirit through meeting physical needs MUST be not only preached but adhered to! (Please hear my heart- telling, preaching, exposing the Gospel is necessary but it must be coupled with sacrificial action.)

Hey Wendy, I think its a challenge, i just don't think its the biggest challenge. I don't think that money gap is any more important than the racism issues that every country faces. I also think that peace and unity is just as large an issue as well...you've got all these crazies out there citing religious differences and then blowing up cars/people.

on average about 300 people show up for his class on a Sunday - when there are 35 members in the church. He is leveraging the class to influence people who might never get that close to him otherwise. Strength? Weakness?
