Reflections on REVEAL's Launch

Well, it has been an amazing day at the Leadership Summit. Michael Porter, Colin Powell, John Ortberg, and then the interview with Richard Curtis. There were so many times today when time stopped and I forgot where I was. I was totally absorbed in the moment. And challenged. Challenged to really think hard about what God wants from me. Especially in light of all the pain and suffering in the world. It was a great reminder of how high the stakes are and how important it is for our churches to really be clear about our mission and strategy.

But all that happened after REVEAL was officially launched from the stage. Bill Hybels explained some of the history of our research and showed a short clip of a video we made to explain our work. Both the short and long versions of the video are on our site, and we hope to post Hybels' video comments soon. At lunch, Cally, Eric, and I hosted a meeting with 300 people here in South Barrington. Very cool discussion. We filmed that too and will have that up soon, I hope. But it was all very encouraging. Several folks had already read the book and felt a strong connection with the work. And again it became clear that we are just beginning and have lots of work ahead. But I think we are on the right track.

So now at the end of the day, I am trying to put it all together: the REVEAL stuff with the other things I experienced in the Summit (believing that there are no accidents where God is concerned). I am convinced that we must do the work to discover how churches can accelerate people's growth toward a Christ-centered life, because our world needs people fully submitted to Christ, fully in love with him, and fully engaged with the things that matter most to him: the lost, the poor, the oppressed. And I am completely convinced that we can do this together. I look forward to the journey ahead and invite you to join in for the ride.

I'd especially like to hear from those of you who saw the REVEAL presentation at the Summit. What was your reaction? Anything you need clarified? What questions were you left with?

I'd be nitpicking if I were to critique the way REVEAL was presented, I think you guys did a good job. I bought the book the first day of the Summit and read it that day. I'm here with about 40 people from my church and many of them were excited about REVEAL after hearing the presentation. We're signed up for the further research and I'm hoping through this we're able to become more effective at not only evangelizing people but helping them become fully devoted Jesus-followers. Not everyone talking about "being fed" is able to really articulate what they mean and I think sometimes the legitimate concerns are lost amid the people who just don't want to think through their faith and own it for themselves. Hopefully this REVEAL thing will help differentiate a bit between legit and lame complaints people have.

Many of us from our church in NJ bought the book and there has been discussion about applying to be one of the site surveyed...not sure how that will turn out. We talked about the stalled people, what that means and how to encourage people to be self-feeders, which I agree with Bill Hybels, is where we need to be leading people. Thank you for publishing your findings before you felt you had all the answers...and being willing to involve others in the process. I think the future will find that you have hit onto something important...all beause you were willing to ask hard and honest questions... thanks for putting this on a blog too...I will be looking back for more updates.
