Comment Here On Session 8

In this session, Bill Hybels' interview with filmmaker Richard Curtis will compel you to think in new ways about how you care for those you pray for. He has some things to say to the church that we need to hear. I hope you will listen with an open mind and careful consideration about the things that stirred the heart of Christ.

If you don't know much about Richard Curtis, take a minute to check out the Session 8 session-in-depth page. Just go to the right hand navigation and click on his picture for video, links, and all the information you'll ever need.

I want to invite you, as we do for all of our sessions, to comment here on what you hear and the implications it has for your leadership. And when I ask for your comments, I need you to know that "I'm just a blogger standing in front of a blog reader and asking them to comment…"

(Non-movie fans, please forgive me. That was a really, really bad reference to Richard Curtis' movie Notting Hill with Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant.)

Check back here for related links that we'll be adding during the session, and don't forget to explore the multitude of links, resources, and next steps available on the sessions-in-depth pages.

Enjoyed hearing the story of Richard Curtis. He is a great spokesman for global poverty. I believe there is tremendous power in being the messenger. May I suggest, that messngers seem to get noticed. This is good, but who are the people dipping the ladle in the front of the food lines? I want to hear their stories too.

Hey, does anyone know or know how to find out the email of Richard Curtis? I know it sounds like a stretch but i feel that God is moving me to email him about my visions and aspirations for Africa. I feel it is my calling to help lead my generation to end the AIDS crisis and I heard God, during the session, whispering me to email him. We share the same heart. you can email me at mattbower@cox.net or reply..ill be checking..thanks.

OK, so the Richard Curtis film got me to writing. If Jesus loves me, and this I know why does he let them suffer so? How does he stay in heaven above instead of showing his children love? And then I think, what about me? What am I doing so they can be covered and fed and are set free from a hunger I have never known and have a place they can call home? A place to run and jump and play I think that I'll begin today. In my backyard or over seas I want them to see Jesus In me. Send this out to everyone you know if you like and ask them to send $1 or more to World Vision or Make Poverty History. Can 1 person make a difference? We'll see! In Christ Service Rev. Rock

I thought the Richard Curtis interview was quite compelling. My first thoughts were that we (Summit attendees) need to share our wealth immediately to feed and care for the impoverished. The adage about "give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day, teach him how to fish and he'll eat for a lifetime" applies here. However, these people are so weak they can't hold the fishing pole! I think that the opportunity to collect money for these people was lost with the announcement to collect donations to locate a Summit in impoverished countries. I am not belittling the value of the Summit, but we must address the physical need right now or there will be no one to minister to in the future!

Hey Ron, This is Ray from Willow and I have to say that even though I knew we were going to talk about the Global Leadership Summit offering at the end of this session, it still took me off guard. My first gut-feeling was exactly what you described - a concern that a leadership development experience might pale in comparison to finding a safe place and a hot meal for a little girl in a yellow dress. But I have to say, now through my tears (my wife and I hope to adopt little girls from India some day or from somewhere else it's hard to be a girl), I have to say that God immediately brought to mind Michael Porter's session from this morning. Our combined giving tomorrow towards hot meals and a few beds for a while is one kind of "good", but fanning the flames of Godly leadership so churches can wisely prevail and lift entire regions out of a poverty that breaks God's heart - that is "doing well at doing good". It felt, after the initial weirdness, like an awesome application of the higher-level thinking that Porter called us to. I so appreciate your bringing this up - it really helped me process the tension I felt and my hopes deepest hopes for little girls in yellow dresses suffering on the streets tonight. The truth is, we need both kinds of approaches, and I pray we move quickly and strategically on both. Thanks again, Ron!

I heard about a quote from Rob Bell, "In the Bible, the highest measure of theology is fruit. " So could it be that here is a guy that has not quite figured out faith, but has his theology correct? It seems like he is living the message of Jesus concerning the poor much better that many of us who have been in church all of our lives and claim Jesus as Lord. How have we sat by so long and let the poor in the world, including those in our own town, live lives of hopelessness? I was absolutely exhausted after today. I am emotionally drained. We had a great discussion about today on our hour plus drive home. Lord, help us to see what you are leading us to do in Frederick and the world.

The image of the little girl in the yellow dress wrecked me. I saw my three year old daughter in her, making her bed, but not in the safety of her room, not with the help of a loving parent, but alone...on the sidewalk of a dark and lonely street. God forgive me for my selfishness, for wanting a better or bigger bed, when others have none. God have mercy...on me...but not just me...on all of us...on a little girl in a yellow dress.

I loved seeing this interview with Curtis! What I was most curious about was whether he was this philanthropic before he made all his money...if I had to guess, I would think its easier to give & raise more money when you have a lot of it already. Also, it was encouraging to me to hear Sean Wolfington's testimony...I'm in the tech industry and its great to know there are Christians in my industry using their money to make a difference.

The interview with Curtis wrecked me too. Couple what he's DOING with what Michael Porter sketched this morning and yesterday's finale theme of playing to our strengths... wow. God gave us all gifts for a reason. We owe it to Him to parlay the skill sets we successfully employ in the commercial world for the betterment of His kingdom. God spoke to me through Session 8: How can I do what I do, for the greater good? How can we not ask ourselves that question after seeing that example?

When Bill encouraged everyone to go out and rent "The Girl in the Cafe" I did just that! ...and now I wish I never did. I couldn't believe that it had a nude scene with implied sex. Besides that, the message of helping global poverty seemed overly simplistic. At the summit they talked enough about porn, sex addiction, and purity enough...it seems like they wouldn't have promoted a movie like that. Sure, we shouldn't throw the baby out with the bathwater, but c'mon...let's not feed the addiction that is destroying pastors across the nation.

Hi Judah, Kristen Here!  Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the movie.  I haven't seen it myself but had planned to as well.  Thanks for your caution.  I am interested in your comment on it addressing global poverty in an "overly simplistic" way.  I would love to hear more about your thoughts on that and your experience in addressing global poverty.  I'm just starting to get my feet wet in this area myself and am total learning mode.  thanks!
