Comment Here On Session 6

If you could put together a group of leaders you respect and sit them around the table and listen in on the conversation, who would your guest list include?

Our session 6 conversation between General Colin Powell and Bill Hybels is a dream team pairing of two leaders who define integrity, wisdom, and authenticity.

Listen well and engage deeply because the leadership lessons you will hear are not to be missed.  Along the way, share your reactions, questions, and insights here.

Check back here for related links that we'll be adding during the session, and don't forget to explore the multitude of links, resources, and next steps available on the sessions-in-depth pages.

Check out Dave Ferguson's post for this session to see a great summary of Powell's leadership principles.

Why are all the big names only present by pre-recorded video? I should've saved some money and done the satelite location or the DVD

Yes, I am disappointed as well that Colin Powell will be on video. I had no idea until now that he was going to be on video rather than in person.

Agree – it’s definitely disappointing that 3 of this year’s presentations are via video. My hunch is that it has something to do with security, scheduling and the like. However, I still believe this is the BEST use of $$ one can spend on furthering his or her leadership skills. There is simply no other experience like this where leaders in the field of leadership come together and share their knowledge and expertise with … well … US!

Bill Hybels was worth the trip alone....he is a man who knows God and God speaks strongly through him...I would say I enjoy hearing him more than anyone else here even Colin Powell...

the Courageous Leadership Award presentation was motivating and humbling . . . amazing what these churches are doing. Can the other churches that didn't win have their stories posted on the web? I hope that next year, along with hearing the recipients of the $200,000 award, that we would hear updates from these three winners. Awesome!

I appreciate how General Powell created the environment for his followers to offer feedback and give their thoughts. He made himself available for them to speak to him directly rather than going through the chain of command.

I am at a satelitte location and we were just handed the ordering form for the team edition DVD pack. I am wondering why it does not include all of the sessions; including this one.

I was informed that what ever sessions that were not included is because they did not sign a release form.

Some Summit speakers do not give permission for their talks to be included on the team DVD's--and the ones included on the order form are those we have already received permission to include. Occasionally, after the Summit a speaker will give permission to include his or her session. If that happens, that session will be automatically added to the Team DVD before it's sent out. Check back here after the Summit and you'll be able to see the full list of sessions on the DVD if it changes.

I wish we could have all the speakers on the team dvd also. The reason why not all of them are on it is because they haven't given us permission to use the session, normally it's because of copyright issues. Also, regarding the use of videos, it would be great to get some feedback as to what is a good ratio--how many videos/video interviews vs. live ones? In the case of Powell, we have invited him to the Summit for at least the last 3-4 years and he has said no. Then we tried the video interview route, we sent him an example of the Bono video and he still said "no." Finally, Bill was able to get him to change his mind. Regarding the other video interviews, it is the same story...that a video interview sometimes is the entree we need to reach some of these "unreachable" people. Your feedback on this dilemna is obviously welcome!

I thought Colin Powell was excellent and the fact that he was on video/DVD did not diminish his impact. Willow does an amazing job - as was acknowledged by Michael Porter. Thanks for a great conference! Tye

As promised, my list of Powell’s Leadership Axioms: #1 – promote a clash of ideas (don’t surround yourself with yes men); #2 – encourage a noisy system (bring others in to debate ideas); #3 – remember that only people get things done (spend 1/3 time planning, 2/3 time enacting); #4 – maintain an open-door policy; #5 – probe the organization (in other words, go outside the chain of command at times to learn what others are thinking); #6 – reward your best performers … get rid of poor performers (pruning the organization will make it stronger); #7 – be prepared to disappoint people … to make some people angry; #8 – check your ego at the door; #9 – make sure you have fun in your command (‘cuz it settles your mind); #10 – fit no stereotypes; #11 – remember that optimism is a source multiplier (multipliers allow leaders to gain advantage); #12 – know that things always look better in the morning; #13 – avoid war if at all possible; #14 – trust the element of instinct; #15 – prepare to be lonely. Powell made three other points I jotted down. Namely … churches have the responsibility of educating the congregation on the issues of the day. We have an OBLIGATION to go after those who are just not like us. AND … when a leader has set clear goals, communicated them with passion, is leading ethically and honestly, is leading for the purpose of accomplishing corporate goals (not personal goals) … a foundation of trust now exists that defines a high performing organization. AND ... all of us have a debt of service that we may never be able to repay.

First of all, I would have much rather have had this session on video than to not have it at all!!! My 2 main take-aways on this session are: 1. I am so blessed that I serve at a church that encourages a "clash of ideas". 2. We need to do a better job of probing the organization. I was extremely impressed with the character and integrity of General Powell.

Wendy Seidman asked – What is a good ratio between live vs video presentations? My opinion is that 2 video presentations (interviews) is a sufficient number. Personally, I think that the videos are many times as effective (if not more so) than the live presentations. Why? – one reason is because they are edited (speakers don’t ramble too long after they've made their point) and they are “gussied up” (pictures, music and other media – along with key points – are inserted for effect). That being said, however, I think most of us feel that when we pay for the conference, we want the “real deal”. And that simply means a live person.

I just don't think having them LIVE really makes a big difference. Unless you were on the floor in the first section, let's be honest you looked at the main screen the whole time because you could see details better. Plus, it is the 21st century and everything's media centric so it really shouldn't be a shock. I'd much rather have heard Colin Powell give this message via video, then have someone else have spoken in person. Can i hear an amen? :)

Can you say excellence? Talk about being in the "presence" of an exceptional leader! I don't care if it was video taped or live: Hybels was the interviewer, Powell was the interviewee, and WE were the audience. If just a dusting of Powell rubs off on me as a result of hearing that interview, the whole Summit will have been worth it (although, I've got a serious amount of nuggets in my pocket even if that doesn't happen).

Being a retired military officer myself, I was especially looking forward to Colin Powell's talk. Being a follower of Christ, I was more excited when I learned the method would be interview style. I've heard the General speak several times before and have always been inspired by him. But the thought of Bill leading the discussion to get inside his head was an added benefit for me. This is my third Summit and I try to take a way at least one big idea from each talk. This one was not obvious to me at first and required a good deal more processing; hence the late post. It came near the end when Colin stated how he wanted to be remembered. So for me that big idea is in the form of a few questions. What really motivates you? Can you write it down? Are you willing to pay the price to accomplish those objectives? If yes, then what are your doing today, this week, or this year toward their end?

The session with General Powell had the greatest impact. I just wished his video is included in the DVD because what he said is something that's worth sharing with other leaders. And something that we should listen (and watch) to over and over. I was so blessed and inspired by this Summit.
