He's saying "STRENGTHS-BASED APPROACH". Such as the new strengths-based approach in psychology = positive joy. My interpretation? - emphasize the positive, not the negative.

Hi! I read the book a few years ago, and found out that each "Now, Discover Your Strengths" book contains a code to an online strengthsfinder test in the back of the book. Hope that helps!

In case you missed it, I think this is all right. Number - False Leter - Truth 1. As you grow your personality changes. a. As you grow, you become more of who you already are. 2. You grow the most in your areas of greatest weakness a. You grow the most in your areas of your strengths 3. A great team member puts his streanths aside and does whatever it takes to help the team a. A great team member volunteers his strengths to the benefit of the team

Here are the 3 truths as they were shown on the screen: 1) As you grow, you become more and more of who you already are. 2) You’ll grow most in your areas of greatest strengths. 3) A great team member volunteers his strengths to the team most of the time.

Great message and inspirational. Changing the world to this mindset is quite the leadership challenge. Marcus' message provides the context and a vision for all to achieve collectively.

Excellent session! Challenges me to work with our volunteers in a more concerted way, for their benefit, to grow them as individuals and in their roles. People who appear to have little to offer are often not aware of their true strengths - it happens in our churches as well as our schools. Let God reign in our homes and workplaces through the encouraging word!

I've taken the StrengthFinder test and it was incredibly accurate. The output is your top five strengths (out of about 30). My whole work team also took it - same accurate reads on them. Highly recommended.

This session took on a personal edge for me. I see how much I've focused on my weaknesses to the point of invalidating any strength I might have thought I had in my business, spiritual, and personal life. I really want to work on seeing my strengths, working on them, and encouraging others to do the same. Very eye opening. I can't wait for tomorrow.

After Marcus was done talking, the gentleman that came on stage mentioned something about a "webenair" that Marcus was offering to Summit participants for free. (or something to this effect) Does anyone know anything about this or where/how to sign up? Thanks! PS - As a local high school mathematics teacher, this session really challenged me as I approach the start of the school year here in a couple of weeks. It will be interesting to see how this session influences me as a teacher in the coming months and if colleagues/parents/students notice something different. Can't wait for tomorrows sessions!

The WCA moderator mentioned that the "webenair" (I love this new Internet-based language we've developed!) will be posted online after the Summit has concluded. My hunch is that it will post under the NEXT STEPS tab on Buckingham's page.

There will likely be several things posted at the conclusion of the Summit, including Buckingham's webinar. The team has done a fabulous job of taking the execution of the Summit to an incredible level of interaction. The use of web seminars as a follow-on is a great way to keep the event "sticky" with attendees! Great job. Oh, and Buckingham's presentation was my favorite presentation today as well - with the exception of Bill's opening remarks.

Is anyone out there wrestling with the theological implications of what we heard from Marcus today? I definitely was awed by his presentation and I fully affirm looking for the unique beauty of those who lead and those who follow, but given that the majority of Summit attenders are church leaders, I think there's a caution here. There's something about this positive psychology stuff that doesn't seem to completely jive with Jesus' leadership model- I'm having a hard time putting a finger on it, but it feels like it puts distance between me as a leader and people who are broken, hurting or are weaker than I am (unless you're operating out of either the restorative strength or the empathic strength). Maybe it's a vulnerability thing? We just heard from Breaux Wednesday night how Peter's failures were ultimately his most redemptive leadership quality. And I can't imagine Jesus saying to him, "hey man, you've got communicator, activator and command, so go get 'em tiger!" I don't think that's why he excelled so much in leadership as he KNEW from his weaknesses how central things like grace, patience and second chances are to leading well. So yeah, lean into what God made beautiful about you, but should we maybe think twice about this pop-psychology movement?

Allison--I couldn't agree with you more. I love Buckingham's work, and have taken our Youth Ministry staff through _Now, Discover Your Strengths_ and have read and enjoyed _First, Break All the Rules_ myself. His stuff is great. But the theological question persist. Does Christ really call us, for example, to "become more of who [we] already are?" And if _who we already are_ is steeped in sin, do we really want to give up on the possibility of changing, especially in our areas of weakness? I'm sure Buckingham could venture a more nuanced answer to these questions, but I share your hesitation when it comes to dissecting his models from a theological standpoint.

I adore Marcus as a presenter. I was delighted to see him again in the faculty this year. I have not been rigorous in using Go at work (high tech) but I will be. I have been quite rigorous about it in my very active lay ministry life. This ties very directly to Spritual Gifts based ministries. Also, even my daughters have received some strenghths based training in our Austin public elementrary school, called "A Mind that is Mine." Please come back. You are not irrelevant! You just must not be asking the right question yet in the polls, Marcus! Terry

Abrahm and Allison, I do think God creates us with strengths He wants us to build on. For example, in the area of spiritual gifts, scripture tells us we have unique gifts and to use them (not to work on improving our areas of un-giftendness.) "For those with the gift of leadership, lead with diligence," for ex.) Also, the analogy of the body, where no part is more important than the other, but each is needed and we should support each other in our unique roles.

One thing I found so interesting about Mr. Buckingham's presentation were the Gallop poll results. In 2000 (pre 9/11) it showed that the USA was: strengths - 41% weaknesses - 59%, then in 2006 the USA was: strengths - 37% weaknesses - 63%. When you think that after 9/11 we as a country did focus on our weaknesses. How did this happen, what do we need to do to make sure this didn't happen again? This is what we thought about as a country. It just goes to show that we are back on track as a country, and hopefully from now on we can focus more on our strengths.!

First of all, I can't believe how much Marcus looks like Chris Rattan off SNL (night at the roxbury). Secondly, I felt like this session disturbed me the most because its kind of scary for me to even entertain the fact that I might be in the wrong job. My strengths come so easy to me that i've been more interested in working on "mediocre" talents to make them strengths as well so this session was good for me.

My favorite session! Although, I think the positive psychology can go too far and can be as much of a problem as anything, if overdone. It seems that kids in middle class to upper class homes have had too much encouragement and not enough discipline. I heard a statistic the other day that said that Narcissism among young people is higher now than ever. I believe it. Kids walk around thinking they are better than everyone else and think that the world owes them something. In my view this is from too much “positive” reinforcement and not enough discipline. There has to be a balance. I would %100 agree that most poverty level homes need to implement more positive psychology to help their children to strive for greatness and believe that the sky is the limit. Colon Powel did a good job stating what this looks like. Although shame can be bad, a child needs to know the sense of shame in order to want more for their lives than government handouts.

To Allison ~ I totally understand your apprehension regarding Marc's assertions but would like to offer why I believe he is right on target. In my view, our sin is definitely our struggle to overcome, but it is what we do rather than who we are. "Who we are" is made in the image and likeness of Christ." Drawing on my own life story, and thinking about the difference between "what I'm good at and what makes me strong" to discern my true strengths/purpose: I have lived 20 years as an adult excelling professionally and in my church using my gifts of management and administration. But all the while, I have experienced a growing discontent in my life and even struggled with severe daily headaches as I do "what I'm good at." But for the last three years I've tried to be still and listen to God more and the growing discontent in my soul. What Marcus has helped me realize is what makes me feel strong is coaching others, encouraging people when they are down and inspiring/mobilizing people with the idea of something that does not yet exist. Before, I named those as my weaknesses but now I believe they are really my God-ordained strengths and it's only now that God's grace has allowed my brokenness to fade enough to see what is true. What I will do with the next 20 years of my life is unclear, but whatever it is, I know it will be about serving God by "showing another way is possible" and growing my gifts of leadership, discernment and encouragement. In this respect, Marcus' ideas are totally reconcilable with your insights about Peter's story. And like Peter, it has been God's patience, grace and second chance for me that has helped me see my way to a future that does not involve me doing something well that He did not intend for my purpose (and thank you no more headaches!). Please, continue to wrestle with this - everyone will benefit from your journey!!

The whole conference was fantastic and the Web tools really do help keep it sticky. I've downloaded Marcus's slides and white paper which are great but I cannot find the "webnair" link - everything that I find needs a passcode from his book - am I missing something. I understood that we'd be able to take the Stength test online for free. Thanks again for a great and inspiring conference, I love Marcus's session and the timing was perfect.

Hello Ian!  I think the only way to actually take the Strength Finder test is through Marcus' book.  But, once you've taken the test, these free podcasts from Marcus might be helpful.  They are under the Next Step tab on Marcus page.  That link has the following message and a link to click through:  To help you put your strengths to work, listen to Marcus Buckingham’s six-week podcast program available through iTunes.  Hope that is helpful.  Please come back and share with us how this has impacted your leadership.  We would love to hear.

What one idea did you bring back that really impacted your thoughts? Was it motivation, inspiration, creating a vision, etc. How do you plan to implement an action plan around that one idea. There are multiple needs in my department in which I am one of the team managers around vision and buy-in. How do you remove the non-inspirational attitudes and “lead” in a non-inspirational culture?
