Comment Here On Session 2

Just when you thought it couldn't get any better ... Here comes Carly Fiorina!  Since reading her book, Tough Choices, this is the Summit session I've been looking forward to the most.

Carly's personal leadership journey is inspiring and instructive.  As an advocate for women in leadership in the church, I am especially eager to hear from a leader who leads fearlessly and is honest about the ups and downs along the way.

So, now it's your turn.  Let us know throughout this session what impacts you and what thoughts and questions you have along the way.  Right now, it's an unforgettable look at Homeless Karaoke and later, Carly... let the conversation continue!

Hear from the filmmaker of Homeless Karaoke, Iris Ichishita

I read the book. I believe that Bill is right - it is amazing. I can only imagine that it must be more amazing for a women in leadership.

Wow . . . I loved Bll's "big picture" approach to the influence we can have as leaders. But in this session Nancy made it amazingly personal through the film, song, video & her comments. I (for one) am inspired by both perspectives. THANK YOU.

I'm very grateful for parents that, though divorced and not "perfect," never pressured me to choose one life direction. Both mom and dad opened a world of options to me (as wide as they were able) and encouraged me in any passion I had. In fact, I ended up as a professional trainer, not too far from the careers of both of my parents: teachers!

Carly's honesty is compelling. This session so far has been a lesson to me in the difference between what it means to be "fearless" and what it means to be "courageous".

I believe its so hard in this world where image and acceptance is everything to make choices and stick to them regadless of the consequences....

I so agree with Carly about unlocking the potential in others. I feel like the church a lot of times, talks about it, but it's hard for us to really do that when we have stuff we need to get done right in our faces. I'm a professional trainer, too, and that is what has been my passion since i can remeber.

What an insight - fame makes it all but impossible to connect with those you lead in an authentic way.

The desire for fame and fortune certainly leads one down the wrong path...alone. True leaders, like those we've seen already, are transparent and realize that success is best measured in lives touched. It cannot be accomplished by oneself or using one's power alone. Only through God's grace and power can one transform lives and live out whatever vision He has given you.

Carly Fiorina was very afraid? WHA???? And this led her to deal with her fears one at a time (getting stronger each time) and gave her keen antennae to read other people's fears? Whoa! That was some good schtuff!!

"Asking the right question..." great insight and very true. Carly should run for Senate. We need more people like her serving in government.

Quick thoughts in response: >It's so great that WCA is providing this wonderful feedback... good job "open sourcing" this event. >The best insight I got from Carly F. was that "Logic shows you the power of the right questions." >I think I'll not only buy her book but I might get a few copies for others, especially women leaders/pastors I know. >One woman on our team had wondered why the only woman on the schedule for this event wasn't given the stage to speak herself, I explained that in the past other women have been speakers, but it was significant that she perceived that as odd. That's all for now. -David Drury Executive Pastor College Wesleyan Church

Some people have been asking how to get Carly’s book, Tough Choices. You can either pick up a copy at your site’s Summit Resource Center or order it at The Leadership Summit Store here at the Online Experience.

David, thanks for the observation you passed on. You're right women have had "the stage" vs. interviews in the past (Karen Hughes, Pat Summit, Peg Neuhauser). We have to try and determine which format would be best for that speaker. And we have made mistakes. I.e. with Pat Summit, we all realized that if we had interviewed her, she would have had the freedom to give us what was on her heart and mind vs. worrying about her intro, conclusion, powerpoint, etc. She delivered better content and was more relaxed and engaging in an interview she did right after her Summit talk. And now that I've heard Carly, I wonder if the interview format enabled her to expand on stories and issues that she may never have brought up in a talk.

Carly was PHENOMENAL!! She majorly earned my respect after this session...what an incredible communicator!! Her eyes said it all! She's an inspiration to me and I think she'd be a no-brainer for any role in politics. She could make a HUGE difference in our government!!

Yes, Carly is certainly a good communicator - remember that when it comes to "politics" and what she may be doing to prep the stage. One must remember that although a seasoned business professional with credible "business" insight, making the leap to being a Christian "role-model" may be a bit of a stretch. Remember....she does know how to communicate and "say the right things"... the question is, does her life, over a long period of time, consistently demonstrate what being a Christian role-model is really all about.

Thanks, Wendy, for your clarification of the situation on that one issue above. I do want to stress that there has been a fairly consistent effort to represent minorities in leadership from the stage at the summit in the past several years--so keep it up! -David
