Q&A - Wendy Kopp - What is the Church's role in education?

Q: What is the church's role in academic education? Which should play a bigger role in lives and in society?

A: The church is called to impact the world, and that role should be carried out 100%. Wendy Kopp's request of churches in Session Three was "to encourage and challenge our youth to serve with two years of their lives to contribute to this transforming of the unequal educational system in our country and the world." The church's role in academic education isn't specifically outlined in the Bible, but Teach for America is aligned with God's passion for a church that impacts the world and fights against injustice.

In addition to challenging youth to commit two years to teaching, what about the parents, teachers, principals, grandparents, students, custodians, siblings, cousins, and aunts and uncles who are already directly connected to schools around our country every day? 50-85% of every congregation in the pews on any given Sunday is already strategically placed as salt and light on school campuses from Monday-Friday. What might happen if pastors activated them for the the work of ministry, advocacy, and service within schools? What might happen if each of the 300,000 evangelical churches in America intentionally prayed for just 1 of the country's 100,000 public schools? Dare we expect God to answer those prayers? What if we took those prayers a step further? What if, instead of praying for God to send someone to save a random school on the other side of town, we prayed for a school within walking distance of our congregation, and then further committed to become answers to those prayers within those schools? Might we actually see God use us? For more questions like these and practical ideas how to engage educational justice at the congregational level, visit 20/20 Vision for Schools: www.2020schools.net.
