Healoetry and Other Thoughts from Charlie Hall

Charlie is known around the globe as a passionate and gifted song writer and worship leader.  We thought you might like the opportunity to get to know him a little...to get to learn from him check out his class at Wonder, the Heart Coming Alive: Bringing Your Life to Worship.

If you had to describe your artistry in one word, what would it be?
Healoetry which is healing poetry shoved together to make one word so I could answer that question.

How did you develop a love for your art?
I started around seventh grade really enjoying putting words and thoughts together.  I think as time has gone on it has become my way of processing my own life and I believe my love for this art has come from loving processing my life inside of God.

What inspires you?
People risking normalcy to make life changes.

Describe your 'creative process'.
Most of my process comes by just journaling when I see words that seem to explode with a lot of meaning, as well, digesting scripture enough to where it comes out naturally in the songs. Another process I use is writing everything on paper that I see as a brainstorm for a topic or a story, phrases, rhymes, word pictures, anything I can think of.

What is a common mistake you notice during the creative process?
Stopping short of making something creatively different than other things, and also when I allow my work to not mean something to me.

What is one of the most important lessons you learned as a worship leader?
To not pretend that I am someone else when I'm leading.  And to not lead people to think I'm someone that I'm not.

What is one lesson you have learned since you first began writing worship music?
That songs come from God's inspiration and thoughtful work, together.

How would you encourage artists who serve the church?
Don't stuff God in your art.  Place your art in God - this is where our art moves and has life, in God.  This means we serve and creat with much more room to reveal God, His ways, and kingdom.  With this small thought change our art becomes more authentic and frees the human heart, causing us to spotlight God and bring Him the ultimate applause.
