Among the Easily Impressed

My good friend Stan Endicott, a mentor of worship arts leaders all over the country is a fabulous husband, father, husband, leader, and artist.  But the most important thing I could tell you about Stan is simply that he loves Jesus and other people ferociously.  Stan almost never fails to send me an e-mail without a word of inspiration or wisdom.  The most recent was this phrase:  "I always want to count myself among the easily impressed."  I love that challenge!  It beckons us to embrace the wonder of the ordinary moments in life, to never be too cool to be stunned.  I will carry that phrase around with me for a long time

So this morning, I had a rather rushed morning with too much to do (can you relate?)  But it's just so gorgeous here in Chicago today, so I allowed 15 minutes to take a brief walk down to the little lake a few blocks away.  In those brief minutes, I was easily impressed by the sparkling water, the new tiny, intricate white wildflowers that have recently sprung up, and the fish that scared me when it jumped.  On my way home, I picked up a leaf.  The colors of autumn are in the early stages of their audacious display, and this particular leaf featured a warm yellow, hot red, and small peaks of green still showing through.  How beautiful.  So I urge you this day, as my friend Stan urged me - be easily impressed.  Look for the wonders that surround you in creation, in the eyes of your loved ones, in words on a page.  Let's not be too cool!

I spent the afternoon with my Mom ... she is a remarkable woman.  It is so easy to be impressed with the remarkable woman she is.  I thank God for the gift of her in my life.

If I head towards a place of not being easily impressed, I know my heart is getting a little hardened or dulled by my pace of life. I need to slow down and make sure I get outside to refresh my senses.

I don't want to miss the moments God has for me when he displays his creativity.
